Index Futures Killzones (ES / NQ / YM)

Also: index futures trading windows, morning killzone, afternoon session, equities killzone, 8:30 AM window, 1:30 PM window, no-trade zone, lunch hour

Time-Based high symmetrical

Index futures (ES/NQ/YM) have specific high-probability trading windows that are distinct from the Forex killzone times taught in 2016–2017. The two primary windows for intraday index futures trading are: (1) Morning session: 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM New York time. The 8:30 AM mark is when major US economic data releases (NFP, CPI, etc.) set the initial Judas Swing and Opening Range. The morning session produces the first significant directional move. (2) Afternoon session / 1:30 PM Macro: 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM New York time. The 1:30 PM mark is an algorithmic trigger for the afternoon session. This is the second primary trading window. No-trade zone: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM New York time (midday/lunch hour). ICT explicitly instructs traders to avoid taking new positions during this window due to low liquidity, erratic price action, and the absence of institutional order flow. FOMC / high-impact news days: the morning session trade is valid but positions should be closed before the news release to avoid unpredictable volatility.

Identification5
  • Morning killzone: 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM New York time. Look for the Judas Swing to form early (8:30–9:30 AM) and the true directional move to develop during this window.
  • Afternoon session: 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM New York time. The 1:30 PM macro triggers the second directional move of the day.
  • No-trade zone: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM New York time. Do NOT take new positions during this hour.
  • The equities regular session opens at 9:30 AM NY — this is NOT the same as the 8:30 AM futures reference. The 9:30 opening can create an additional volatility spike (often part of the Judas Swing).
  • FOMC days: trade the morning session if the setup is valid, but exit all positions before the FOMC announcement (typically 2:00 PM NY). Do not hold through FOMC.
Entry2
  • All intraday index futures entries should occur within one of the two killzone windows — morning or afternoon.
  • Setups forming outside these windows (overnight, midday, etc.) are lower probability and generally avoided.
Invalidation1
  • High-impact news events scheduled within the killzone window (e.g., NFP at 8:30 AM on first Friday of month) require special handling — the news IS the Judas Swing trigger.

Inferred Conditions (Unvalidated)

  • These index futures killzone times are DIFFERENT from the Forex killzone times (London: 2–5 AM NY; New York Forex: 7–10 AM NY). The 2022 mentorship explicitly bridges the two systems and states index futures use the 8:30 AM and 1:30 PM windows.
  • The morning killzone for Forex (7–10 AM NY) and the morning killzone for index futures (8:30–11 AM NY) overlap — traders running both Forex and index futures can have a combined morning window.
  • ICT specifically says NOT to trade overnight runs in index futures (Ep 9) — the overnight session is less predictable and not a killzone window.

ICT Quotes

"For index futures, your morning window is 8:30 to 11 o'clock New York time. That's when you're hunting the setup. Then the no-trade zone noon to one. Then your afternoon macro starts at 1:30. That's it. Two windows."

"Seven o'clock in the morning, 10 o'clock in the morning — New York time. That's the New York session killzone for Forex. For indices it's 8:30 to 11."

"FOMC — you can trade in the morning, but you've got to be done early. If you're trading equities it's important to be aware of the economic calendar because we're probably gonna have a lot of volatility later on today."

""Morning window 8:30 to 11 AM NY. No-trade zone noon to one. Afternoon macro starts 1:30. Two windows. That's it for index futures.""

New concept introduced in 2022 mentorship specifically for index futures (ES/NQ/YM). Extends the Forex killzone framework to equity index futures with market-specific time windows. The 8:30 AM and 1:30 PM windows replace the Forex 7 AM and 2 AM London windows for index futures traders.

Notes

CONTRAST WITH FOREX KILLZONES: - Forex London killzone: 2:00 AM – 5:00 AM New York time - Forex New York killzone: 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM New York time - Index Futures morning: 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM New York time - Index Futures afternoon (1:30 PM macro): 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM New York time - No-trade (both): Forex overnight sessions for indices; 12:00–1:00 PM for indices The 8:30 AM reference is driven by US economic data releases, which ICT uses as the Judas Swing trigger for the morning session. This is specific to the US equities and futures market structure. See also: one-thirty-pm-macro.yaml, judas-swing.yaml, opening-range.yaml, london-killzone.yaml, new-york-killzone.yaml

Asymmetry Notes

Time-based concept with no directional asymmetry. The killzone windows apply regardless of whether the trader is going long or short.
