Judas Swing

Also: manipulation leg, false swing, protractionary phase, fake move

Algorithmic high symmetrical

The Judas Swing is the manipulation leg of the Power of Three (AMD) model — a false, engineered price move opposite to the true intended direction of the session or day, designed to trap retail traders, stop out premature positions, and accumulate institutional orders at an advantageous price. For a bullish day, the Judas Swing is an initial decline below the opening price (accumulating long orders at a discount). For a bearish day, it is an initial rally above the opening price (accumulating short orders at a premium). The swing is considered "false" because it reverses and the market then delivers the true directional move. In 2022 ICT teaching applied to ES/NQ/YM index futures, the Judas Swing for the morning session forms between 8:30–9:30 AM New York time (or post-9:30 open), and for the daily range it forms near the midnight NY open. The distance from the 8:30 AM open to the high of the Judas Swing (bearish day) or low of the Judas Swing (bullish day) constitutes the Opening Range, which can be projected in the opposite direction to define accumulation/distribution zones.

Identification6
  • Judas Swing occurs at or near the session open reference price (midnight NY for daily Power Three; 8:30 AM for morning session in ES/NQ).
  • For a bullish day: price initially moves below the opening price — this is the Judas Swing down, trapping shorts. The market then reverses and rallies through the session high.
  • For a bearish day: price initially moves above the opening price — this is the Judas Swing up (rally), trapping longs. The market then reverses and sells off through the session low.
  • The Judas Swing is the 'incorrect initial move' at the open — it occurs before or just after the 9:30 AM equities opening for index futures (EP 13: 'the initial move is technically the incorrect move going into the opening at 9:30').
  • Do not chase the Judas Swing direction — wait for evidence of reversal (market structure shift, FVG formation) before entering in the true direction.
  • The Judas Swing terminates at a level that becomes the reference for the Opening Range measurement.
Entry4
  • Do not enter during the Judas Swing. Wait for it to terminate and for a market structure shift back toward the true direction.
  • After the Judas Swing terminates, look for a fair value gap or order block in the reversal move as the entry trigger.
  • For bearish days: after the Judas Swing rally peaks, look for a bearish FVG or order block to enter short.
  • For bullish days: after the Judas Swing decline bottoms, look for a bullish FVG or order block to enter long.
Target1
  • The true directional objective identified by the higher timeframe draw on liquidity — the buy-side or sell-side liquidity pool that the daily range is targeting.
Invalidation2
  • If price continues aggressively in the Judas Swing direction well beyond the opening price without forming an FVG or market structure shift, the 'false move' thesis is invalid for that session.
  • A daily bias change (HTF narrative shifting) can turn a Judas Swing into the true directional move.

Inferred Conditions (Unvalidated)

  • The Judas Swing is the mechanism that generates the 'opening range' — the distance from the session open to the Judas Swing extreme, which is then projected in the opposite direction to find the accumulation/distribution zone (Ep 10, Ep 11).
  • ICT specifically warns against chasing moves near the equities open (9:30 AM) — the opening volatility frequently IS the Judas Swing for the morning session (Ep 13).
  • In a bearish Power of Three day: open → rally (Judas Swing up, accumulate shorts) → sell off → close near low. The rally IS the Judas Swing.
  • In a bullish Power of Three day: open → decline (Judas Swing down, accumulate longs) → rally → close near high. The decline IS the Judas Swing.

ICT Quotes

"The initial rally here we saw on Monday was a false rally, all that was was heavy selling they engineered price higher, built in a premium, so they can sell it to the smart or lower, intelligent crowd."

"This is like a Judas swing. So think about what we're seeing here — the markets likely go up above this level here to take the buy side because the markets unwilling to go lower. The algorithm keeps pressing higher, higher, higher higher. It retraces down into the 9:30 opening. This is that fake move. Don't chase this."

"the initial move is technically the incorrect move going into the opening at 9:30. So this is like a Judas swing."

""This is like a Judas swing. The initial move is technically the incorrect move going into the opening at 9:30. This is that fake move. Don't chase this.""

2022 mentorship applies Judas Swing explicitly to ES/NQ index futures morning session. The term is used to describe the false move at the 9:30 AM equities open. The Opening Range concept is introduced: the distance from the 8:30 AM open to the Judas Swing extreme, projected in the opposite direction, defines the accumulation/distribution zone.

Notes

The Judas Swing was used as a term in ICT's 2016–2017 Forex content (weekly context, Power of Three). In the 2022 mentorship it is explicitly applied to intraday index futures sessions, particularly the 9:30 AM equities open. The concept is mechanically identical but the reference price shifts from zero GMT / midnight NY (Forex Power Three) to 8:30 AM NY (morning session) and midnight NY (full daily Power Three for index futures). Asymmetry Notes

Symmetrical concept. For bullish sessions the Judas Swing is a false downward move; for bearish sessions it is a false upward move. The trading response is always to wait for the reversal and enter in the true direction.
